Along Amsterdam’s canals, people’s front rooms are so close to the cobbled walkways that you frequently see little displays, sometimes deliberate, sometimes inadvertent, often of children’s things – toys and shoes. At first I assumed they were places of work in some way – the toys might indicate a creche for example, but it’s just how people live. If you peer beyond the toys, you see living rooms and kitchens.
